The 101st Airborne Division was activated 16 August 1942 at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. On 19 August 1942, its first commander, Major General William C. Lee, promised his new recruits that the 101st had "no history but had a rendezvous with destiny." The 101st Airborne sculpture is cut from 1/8 inch steel plate and then hand polished. It is then heat treated and painted for color before finally being finished with a poured on epoxy coating. Because each sculpture is hand made no two are alike. Each sculpture comes with welded on hardware for hanging and 2 inch offsets which gives the sculpture a floating appearance. Hooks for the optional laser engraved black name plate ($40.00) are already installed.
